HOW TO PITCH A PODCAST IN A PANDEMIC
How to Pitch a Podcast in a Pandemic is a podcast about a podcast. It tells people the story where we, the final year journalism class at Rhodes University in South Africa, are on a mission to convince the school to join the podcast revolution and to pitch a podcast which takes traits from the Rhodes Journalism Review, a Rhodes Magazine, also known as RJR.
Our vision is that if podcasting culture is thriving all around the world and is also beginning to take off in our own country, can the Rhodes Journalism and Media Studies School help to turn South African podcasting into an African storytelling revolution? We embark a journey of discovering various storytellers and media practitioners
Follow us in our journey of pitching an idea for a podcast to the school’s leadership that can ignite the revolution during a pandemic. Fun Fact, the planning and production of this podcast started off virtually because of the pandemic, once we got permission from the school to meet in person, that's when the fun started! Relax, get your popcorns and do enjoy.

EPISODES
EPISODE 1
In this episode, we met our class for the first time. this is where we were informed about pitching a podcast idea to the school of journalism and media studies. We had to produce packages where we ask around people about the podcasting culture, such as whether they still listen to podcasts and what they thought of the significance of the podcasting culture.
I contributed in the packages in this episode:
Website
I was part of the team that created the website for How to Pitch a Podcast in a Pandemic. We created the page from scratch. I started off the website , then from there we kept on rotating in giving each other turns to edit the page. It was a great team effort and we worked well together. I had fun creating this website.
EPISODE 2
In this episode, we were taken on a journey on searching for African storytellers. We discovered so many audio storytellers and learnt so much from them. We also had to listen to various podcasts and give a review for how we percieved the podcasts. I listened to 'My Only Story' and also 'It happened here':
I had the privilege of interviewing the Chief Executive of Kagiso Media, Nick Grubb about his radio career. We had such great conversations which were so informative about the podcast culture and radio management :

Episode 3
In the third episode, we were getting to know more about the Rhodes Journalism Review also known as RJR, from the editor of RJR, Prof Anthea Garman. The purpose of HTPPP was to create an audio version of the RJR. In this episode, we got in touch with the people involved with the RJR. I got to interview Brian Garman, the designer of the RJR. It was such a fun and informative interview.
Episode 5
In the fifth episode of HTPPP, we have been discussing the RJR Pitch for 3 weeks. This episode showcases the behind the scenes of the RJR pitch and finally the pitch that we had to present to the school of journalism and media studies.
For the RJR Pitch, I had a role in talking about the anchor role in the Africa Media Review and how I determine the Anchors of the show. I have edited a RJR package below of my section that I presented, and the My Only Story presentation that I was involved in. I also included the comments section where questions were asked by our guests. I included the questions that I had asked and was a part of.
Episode 4
In the fourth episode of HTPPP, we finally got a name for podcast we will pitch to the School, called, Africa Media Review also known as AMR. We focus on the pilot episode of the Africa Media Review podcast. I was the Content Editor for the show together with Sakhe Tshoni, my team member.
We got students to listen to My Only Story Podcast and also give us feedback on the interviews they had from their stories for the AMR podcast. I created the content structure for the episode. I edited the introduction package where students meet, I also edited the discussion package where Jeanne, Steven and Kyran and the class discussed story ideas for the AMR episode.
The interview feedback couldn't be uploaded due to space limit, however, you can listen to it on the episode, I also edited that. Sakhe and I worked together on the script. The entire episode was edited by both Sakhe and I. It was also during this week that I played a leadership role in being the chairperson in the class.
I structured the class, and explained to everyone what was expected of them. I also explained tasks, and also opened a platform for the class to discuss various topics regarding the episode. I really enjoyed this because it got me out of my comfort zone, and be a leader. My leadership skills did not end there but during the week as well to check on the team's progress.
